Umoja-Project Success
Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and teaching responsive to the legacy of the African diasporas.
Who We Are
Umoja-Project Success is a program designed to increase the retention rate and to improve the academic performance of students who meet the Umoja-Project Success admission criteria.
The mission of Umoja-Project Success is to aid the successful transition of students from high school to El Camino College and beyond in order to achieve educational and career goals.
Proven Student Success
Currently, there are over 165 students and 60 mentors actively involved in Umoja-Project Success. The retention rate from the fall to spring first semester averages between 83-95%. This compares to a 50% retention rate of comparable first year students.
Students who complete the program transfer to universities, both in state and out-of-state at a much higher rate and students who transfer complete their bachelor degrees in fewer than three years after graduation from El Camino College.
- Students must be a recent high school graduate or current El Camino College student.
- Students must complete orientation and educational plan requirements
- Students must take the English and mathematics placements tests.
- Students must be highly motivated and possess the desire to earn a college degree.

Umoja Community
Umoja is a Kiswahili word meaning unity.Umoja-Project Success is an affiliate of the Umoja Community. Umoja (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students.
On January 14, 2008, the Umoja Community was officially recognized by the Board of Governors as a legitimate statewide student success program. We believe that when the voice and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success.
