Become a PASS Mentor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Genuine desire to work with students and help them succeed
  • Ability to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities
  • Highly adaptable and willing to learn and implement new strategies for learning
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Awareness and sensitivity to individual learning styles and needs
  • Ability to apply study strategies, goal setting, organizational skills & time management in sessions
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently with self-initiation
  • Good attitude, reliable, responsible, prompt, self-motivated and works with enthusiasm!
  • Successful completion of (course they will be assisting with)
  • Must be available to attend Training prior to the beginning of school
  • Utilizes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canvas and internet effectively
  • Minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0

Multiple skills and attributes are gained from being a PASS mentor. In fact, being a PASS mentor could be an asset to you in future employment prospects. Leadership is a noteworthy skill to put on your resume and a valuable conversation starter in an interview.  The following are skills you gain throughout your role as a PASS mentor:

  • Serve as a role model and resource to students.
  • Support students in one-on-one, group, and/or online sessions Document sessions by ensuring students assisted logs are filled out before and after their sessions.
  • Create intentional spaces where students can learn academic, communication, and transferable skills that can be used to achieve academic goals.
  • Create opportunities for students to develop strong interpersonal and communication skills that will aid students in their professional and personal endeavors beyond their college experience.
  • Provide a space and opportunities for students to reflect on their own values, interests, goals, and future.
  • Provide a space where students can learn more about, celebrate, and honor their own identities and the identities of others in their community.
  • Share campus knowledge and experience as an ECC student to assist mentees with successfully navigating academics, campus life, and resources.
  • Share knowledge of how to access and take advantage of campus resources such as: Student Equity & Achievement Center, Career Center, Counseling Services, Financial Aid, Associate Student Organizations, Special Resource Center, Health Center, Math Center, library services etc.
  • Submit Weekly Forms containing session summaries.
  • Communicate any needs and/or student concerns to your Program Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your Program Coordinator.

 

PASS Mentors are hired for a maximum of 10 hours per week for the duration of the semester (16 weeks). The 10 hours are comprised of the following:

  • 3-4 hours sitting in on course lectures
  • 1-2 hours facilitating PASS sessions
  • 2 ½-3 hours dedicated to session planning and meetings with professor
  • Attending ALL regularly scheduled class lectures/meetings for the class to which they are assigned
  • Modeling successful student behavior, which means being on time to class, attentive, and non-disruptive; other students look to PASS Mentors to set the standard for the class and will mirror PASS Mentors’ behavior
  • Facilitating one to two PASS sessions each week for the course of the semester
  • Being present, punctual, and prepared for all PASS sessions, which includes creating activities, worksheets, and games to stimulate active collaborative learning
  • Always maintaining a professional attitude
  • Meeting with a professor once per week
  • Actively promoting PASS sessions by making in-class announcements, writing PASS session times/location on whiteboard, emailing students, etc.
  • Keeping track of hours and submitting timesheets on time
  • Administering surveys to the class as necessary and submitting paperwork to the PASS coordinator and/or faculty member in a timely fashion
  • Handling additional administrative duties

PASS Mentors are also paid for hours attended/worked at the mandatory pre-semester orientation and training every semester they are employed.
