Family Orientation

Supporting family members, particularly those of first-gen college students, is key to your student's success. Our first-generation family orientations are provided to help you navigate the system and thrive alongside your students. The transition from high school to college can be overwhelming for new students. Family is critical in promoting student achievement and is something we value highly in our program. Join us for First-Year Experience’s annual Family Orientation, tailored to support families, guardians, and caregivers of our incoming students as they begin their college journey at El Camino College.

Attend a Family Orientation

Families of admitted FYE students are invited to attend our annual “Family Orientation." This event is designed to:

  • Teach you about the programs and services offered
  • Give you an opportunity to meet our academic counselors, advisers, and teaching faculty
  • Inform you about valuable resources and tools to help your student succeed
  • Help you learn more about the South Bay Promise, scholarship opportunities, career pathways, and transfer pathways to four-year institutions, and El Camino College graduation requirements

The term first-gen is often used to refer to students who are the first in their families to attend a college or university. More broadly, a first-gen student is a student who's parents have not received a four-year degree from a college or university in the United States.
