Mental Health First Aid Certification Class Offered
Student Health Services will offer mental health first aid certification for higher education from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May 4 in the Alondra Room. Eight hours of flex credit is available for those who complete the course. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served; the course is limited to 28 participants.
Participants will learn about potential risks factors for developing a mental illness, how to recognize mental illness symptoms, and the basics of a five-step action plan to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. Evidence demonstrates that mental health first aid builds mental health literacy, helps the public identify understand and respond to signs of mental illness, and makes people feel more comfortable managing a crisis situation. Specifically, studies found that those who were trained in Mental Health First Aid have greater confidence in providing help to others, greater likelihood of advising people to seek professional help, and can help decrease stigmatizing attitudes.
