El Camino College's inaugural "First-Gen Institute" was a great success! Coordinated by the First Year Experience program and other student services, the conference brought together representatives from more than 30 colleges and universities to discuss ways to support the needs of first-generation college students. From among those who attended, UCLA, USC, San Diego State, and California State University, Dominguez Hills were represented, in addition to community colleges from across Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the Inland Empire, among many other institutions.
Guest speakers included prominent educators and researchers who led the discussion and exploration of the challenges and strengths unique to students who are first in their family to attend college. One highlight of the conference was a panel of student speakers who shared stories of their journey to ECC, challenges as first-generation college students and advice to other first-gen students trying to find their way. Many thanks to FYE, along with KEAS, Project Success, Puente, Student Equity, Men of Color, MESA, Financial Aid, EOPS, RISE, and Student Development for assisting with conference planning.
