Choral Ensembles in Torrance California

CHORAL ENSEMBLES

El Camino offers students three different choral ensembles: one audition ensemble and two non-audition ensembles. To attain membership in an ensemble, students must be enrolled in the appropriate class as defined in the ensemble descriptions below. Auditions are held at the first class meeting. Class meeting times can be found in the Online Class Schedule. Chorale

The Chorale provides an opportunity to participate in a small (30 voice) chamber choral ensemble. Choral literature of all styles is performed, including folk songs and show tunes. Singers in this ensemble perform on campus, in the community, at festivals, and on concert tours. Students receive college credit by enrolling in Chorale (Music 253). Audition is required for membership.

      • Recommended Preparation: previous choral experience
      • Enrollment Limitation: Audition during the first week of class. Student needs to have ability to sing a harmony part. (Interested students should register for the class and prepare to audition the first day. More information will be sent out by the instructor prior to the first class meeting.)

Concert Choir 

The Concert Choir is a non-audition ensemble designed for the study and performance of choral works of various styles. Emphasis is placed on development of the voice in relationship to choral singing and the continuous growth of musicianship appropriate to choral literature. The Concert Choir performs several concerts per year, on and off campus. Students receive college credit by enrolling in Concert Choir (Music 152).

Women's Chorus

This course provides an opportunity to participate in a women’s choral ensemble. Choral literature of all styles composed or arranged for women’s voices will be performed. Singers in this ensemble will perform at the conclusion of each semester. 

      • Enrollment Limitation: Audition. (Auditions are no longer required for this course. Interested students should register for the class and attend the first meeting at the beginning of the semester.)

Mixed Chorus

In this course, the basic principles of choral technique are introduced through the performance of music literature from a variety of style periods. Some of the styles include Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Gospel and Jazz. Student performances are held on and off campus each semester. Students receive college credit by enrolling in Mixed Chorus (Music 151).
