SI Coach Job Description & Application

Become an SI Coach

As an SI coach, you offer support to your peers and attend class along with them. You’ll receive important training for this paid position so you are prepared to share the most effective learning, study, and group-facilitation strategies. 

Students will count on you to:

  • Relay tips on the most effective study skills
  • Integrate “how to learn” concepts with “what to learn” in SI classes
  • Provide leadership to the SI session
  • Model critical-thinking and problem-solving techniques
  • Empower them to become independent learners
 

Qualifications

  • Enjoy interacting with other students
  • Have a good understanding of the content in the course you want to coach
  • A or B grade in the chosen course
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be legally authorized to work in the USA
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with course content and academic development.
  • Attend all scheduled class lectures and labs.
  • Plan and facilitate two 60-75 minute SI sessions per week.
  • Meet with the SI instructor once per week to discuss course material and session planning.
  • Attend six staff meetings for the semester.

 

A typical workweek is 9-15+ hours. For example:

  • 3 to 8 hours attending class lectures/labs, depending on the subject.
  • 1 to 2 hours planning SI sessions.
  • 2 hours facilitating SI sessions.
  • ½ hour meeting with course instructor.
  • Paid professional development and training throughout the semester.

 

Being an SI coach is a paid position with rates starting at $17/hour.
