Campus Banners Project

The campus banners project celebrates the diversity of El Camino’s student body and promotes valuable support services available to all students.

This collective effort involved the installation of more than 200 all-new banners highlighting about 80 El Camino students and 16 programs/services available at the college. The full-color banners were designed with the input of students and representatives of various support services/programs.

Placed strategically throughout campus, the colorful banners not only beautify the environment but also serve as a constant reminder of the College’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus culture.

Display

The full-color banners are mounted on light poles throughout the 126-acre campus, part of a vast and far-reaching initiative designed to inspire and welcome people to campus, while reflecting the college’s diversity throughout its programs and student body.

Process

Led by the Office of Marketing & Communications, the 2-year project produced a highly detailed project that was inclusive from the start, starting with input from students and representatives of various support services/programs. Three separate meetings covered a project overview, design draft ideas, and the final concept.

Design

The banners feature vibrant photos of current and former students along with information about key support services and culture-specific programs, ensuring that all students are aware of the resources available to them.

Along the way, feedback from students revealed that they would like to see themselves as college representatives via this project. They suggested a simple design, with a life-sized photo portrait, name and campus affiliation. Following this response, the full-color vinyl banners were created and are now on full display all over campus.

2022

  • Marketing & Communications (MarComm) created new banner designs for review and consideration.

2023

  • MarComm hosted two pole post banner project meetings and invited over 30 individuals (director-level) from each ECC support program/service as well as student leadership from the Associated Students Organization (ASO) to review and discuss the banner designs.
  • The group discussed the design (student quote vs. support service description), inclusion of preferred pronouns, and asked students for direct feedback.
  • MarComm collected the feedback from employees and students and developed a new round of designs at a second meeting and the committee narrowed down a final banner design that would feature a student alongside their support service program.
  • The groups were asked to submit 5-10 students of varying genders, ages, ethnicities and identities to be featured as representatives for their group.
  • MarComm reached out to students and directors and conducted several photoshoots throughout the year.

2024

  • Design files and photoshoots are completed.
  • Banners are installed in August.
