The OER Initiative at El Camino College is an effort to increase awareness and adoption of OER materials in alignment with CA AB 798. Mary McMillan, one of ECC's own Schauerman Librarians, collaborated on developing ECC's OER Guide for faculty wishing to implement OERs in their courses. This guide is used here under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. CCCOER is a growing consortium of community and technical colleges committed to expanding access to education and increasing student success through adoption of open educational policy, practices, and resources.

Note: Don't confuse OER with OEI (Online Educational Initiative). Both are California Community College-driven initiatives intended to make college more accessible.

Panopto is a video platform that El Camino uses to host video for instructional purposes including supporting accessibility. It integrates with Canvas, is relatively easy to use, generates automatic captions that can be easily edited, and has several interactive features. Panopto can be used to deliver lectures and captures PowerPoint or Keynote slides directly into the recording, and also offers the ability to do screen captures for demonstration purposes. By making short Panopto videos, you can deliver the lecture portion of any course to your students in order to support continuity. Check out this short Panopto how-to video.

Films on Demand offers thousands of high-quality online streaming educational films and videos on a wide variety of subjects from top producers, including National Geographic, PBS, Films for Humanities, and many more. The easiest solution for captioning is using Panopto.

To submit for Caption through TechConnect, please use the instructions at CCC TechConnect.

The 3C Media LTI was created to provide an instructor the ability to access their 3C Media Solutions’ media library directly from within Canvas, and insert that media into their course/s. It’s worth noting that the media in an instructors account can be accessed via two ways:

  1. from within Canvas using the 3C Media LTI, or
  2. from the 3C Media Solutions website. The media presented will be the same regardless of which way it is accessed.

The Distance Education Captioning and Transcription grant enables the California Community Colleges to enhance access and inspire learning for students utilizing distance education. The funding provided by this great resource supports captioning and transcription for online courses, hybrid courses, telecourses and even live classes that utilize web-based content delivery.

The Alternate Text Production Center creates alternate media products for students who require print and electronic Braille, electronic text files, or tactile graphics. With our state-of-the-art technologies, we can provide timely delivery of the tools our students need to succeed.

Pronto is an Instant Messaging tool that syncs up with your Canvas classes. It provides a chat group for all of the students in your class, provides you and your students with the ability to have one-on-one direct message communication; it even syncs to the groups you create for students in Canvas. Pronto provides your students with a hub for social learning using a platform that works like the commercial tools (e.g., WhatsApp) with which they are already familiar. Pronto overlays on Canvas in a regular browser, and it has native iOS and Android apps that you and your students can use as well.

Instructors are required to have a TechConnect Zoom account before using the TechConnect Zoom in Canvas. Sign up for an account at CCC Tech Connect, then respond to the activation email to complete the process.

WebEx, like TechConnect Zoom, is video conference software that is embedded in Canvas. It can be used for virtual office hours or synchronous classes.
