Math Awards
Welcome to the Division of Mathematical Sciences Math Awards page!
The Math Awards celebrates over 50 years of outstanding achievement in mathematics,
computer science, and engineering. Founded by Warren Peterson and Virginia Skinner
in 1973 (with the first award given was only worth $25), this annual event honors
students with awards and scholarships based on their academic performances in math
and computer science courses. Prior to 2017, the Math Awards was combined with the
Division of Natural Sciences awards ceremony to be the Academic Awards Ceremony.
Currently, there are several categories of awards, including:
Math Achievement Awards
For students earning three or more 'A' grades in the calculus sequence
Math Faculty Awards for Excellence
for the top mathematics scholars selected by the mathematics faculty
Computer Science Achievement Awards
For students earning four of more 'A' grades in the computer science curriculum
Computer Science Faculty Award
For the top computer science scholars selected by the computer science faculty
Engineering Certificate
For students earning 'A' grades in the ENGR 9, ENGR 10, and ENGR 11 courses
AMATYC Math Contest Award
For the top scoring students on the math contest sponsored annually by the American
Mathematical Association
Bollinger Award for Mathematical Excellence
Grand award for the top scholar overall in mathematics
Support for the Math Awards comes from the continuous generosity of the El Camino current and emeritus faculty, alumni, administrators, and staff, as well as external donors. You can make a donation by through the El Camino College Foundations Office. Under the "Designation" section, select "Other" and in the box that appears, enter "Account #11514 - Math Faculty Awards for Excellence". All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt following your contribution. Thank you for your support!
