About the Program

Mission

The mission of the Radiologic Technology Program is to prepare well qualified imaging practitioners who are committed to professional growth and life long learning, while supporting the highest standards of ethics, patient care, and technical practice.

Studying radiologic technology has been an illuminating journey, blending science, technology, and patient care seamlessly. Every day, I feel empowered to make a difference in people's lives while advancing in a field that constantly inspires me."

Program Length and Licensing Requirements

The Associate Degree Radiologic Technologist Program begins a new class each spring semester.  The program is 25 months in length of academic class and clinical education (taken concurrently). This consists of four regular academic semesters (spring and fall), as well as two summer and  two winter sessions and  completing the program by week 8 last spring semester.

Students graduate with an Associate of Science Degree in Radiologic Technology from El Camino College at the end of their last fall semester.  Students then complete the remaining courses to complete the program by week 8 of the their last spring semester.

Satisfactory completion of the prescribed course of study qualifies graduates to take both State and National Certification Examinations.

The Radiologic Technology Program is accredited by the California State Department of Health Services (Radiologic Health Branch) and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

  • High School graduation with at least a C average or GED Equivalent
  • Grade point average of 2.25 or better in all post high school courses
  • Recommended Preparation: English 2R, Mathematics 23 or Mathematics 25
  • Complete the following courses: Radiologic Technology A, Anatomy 32 or 34A, Physiology 31 or 34B, with a minimum grade of C in each course.

Acceptance at El Camino College does not guarantee entrance into the Radiologic Technology Program. A program application and transcripts of all academic work completed (high school and college) must be filed during the open application period.

Accepted students will be required to undergo a complete physical examination, background check and drug testing.

The waiting list has been eliminated.  Students must apply annually during the application period for entrance into the program for the following spring semester of the next year.

Radiologic Technology courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C (75%)  before the student may enroll in the next course. Students with prior training or experience may petition for credit by examination for Radiologic Technology 111 and 123.

After Completion

Once the graduate obtains the ARRT (R) licensure  and the CRT (RT) certification from the CDPH-RHB in California, the graduate can apply for employment as a fully licensed and certified Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist and may apply to take the Fluoroscopy Permit License exam.

After successful completion of the fluoroscopy exam, the RT will receive the CDPH-RHB CRT (R,F) certification.

Note: At this time, the El Camino College Radiologic Technology Program  does not offer  specialized courses in fluoroscopy for a state license. The fluoroscopy courses are integrated within the program courses. This program does not offer separate courses in Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, MRI or CT. These are considered advanced degree courses that can be taken after completion of the Rad Tech Program.

Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug is required for admission and continuation in all Health Sciences programs.

  • The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals Organizations (JCAHO) requires verification of competency of all individuals who have direct contact with patients or employees; this includes students doing clinical rotations in the facility.  Competency extends beyond technical skills.
  • The criminal background check, drug screening and other  policy and procedures for meeting this mandated prerequisite is outlined in the Student Handbook.
  • The student shall be responsible paying any associated costs of the annual  criminal background check, drug screening, TB testing and other related requirements from the Clinical Affiliates.
  • JCAHO added a new standard for its accreditations involving personal background checks on all persons involved in direct patient care, which can include employees, volunteers and students. HR 1.20 & Title 5, section 58106 allows districts to establish limitations on enrollment for various reasons including to protect health and safety.

Students must comply with the “Rules of Ethics” contained in the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Standards of Ethics.

The “Rules of Ethics” are minimally acceptable standards of professional conduct for all Registered Technologists and Applicants. The “Rules of Ethics” are intended to promote protection, safety and comfort of patents.

Registered Technologists and applicants engaging in any of the conduct or activities noted in the “Rules of Ethics” or in the conviction of a crime, including a felony, gross misdemeanor or a misdemeanor with sole exception of speeding and parking violations, all alcohol and drug related violations are subject to sanctions and must be reported.

Applicants who have questions regarding limitations related to licensure should contact the ARRT directly.
