Radiologic Technology

The clinical (hospital) training portion of the program parallels the academic courses.

Satisfactory completion of degree and certificate requirements qualifies students for State and National Certification examinations.

 

Once the graduate obtains the ARRT (R) licensure  and the CRT (RT) certification from the CDPH-RHB in California, the graduate can apply for employment as a fully licensed and certified Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist and may apply to take the Fluoroscopy Permit License exam. 

After successful completion of the fluoroscopy  exam, the RT will receive the CDPH-RHB CRT (R,F) certification.

Note: At this time, the El Camino College Radiologic Technology Program  does not offer  specialized courses in FLUOROSCOPY for a state license. The fluoroscopy courses are integrated within the program courses. This program does not offer separate courses in Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, MRI or CT. These are considered advance degree courses that can be taken after completion of the ECC Rad Tech Program.

Technology for Classes

You will be required to have a laptop or tablet with a camera, microphone and internet access.  With the continuing changes in course delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some lectures and exams will be presented remotely (on-line).  ECC has a limited number of computers to loan to students, but you will need a working internet service off campus to be successful.

Requirement for Clinicals

Before being placed at the Clinical Facilities, students must also pass :

• Background check
• Drug screening
• Physical exam with screening for titers,immunizations and vaccines
• TB testing and current BLS-CPR certification also required

Mandatory Orientation

There are mandatory orientation classes during the semester (winter session)  prior to starting the program for the Spring Semester – students accepted into the program will be notified of the time and day.  The tentative dates are posted under the Application Procedure section.  Students are required to carry health insurance and are responsible for all costs associated with pre-admission to the Clinical Education Centers.

 

Students wishing to transfer from another Radiologic Technology program must contact the Program Director for assessment.

Advanced standing will be determined following the submission and evaluation of course descriptions, official transcripts, and verification of clinical experience. No more than 1 to 2 semesters advancement can be allowed and is conditional upon space and final exam scores. 

Students must have completed courses with a grade of "B"or better, and have a letter from the Program Director that they left "in good standing".  Any dismissals due to  violations of the ARRT Code of Ethics or Rules of Ethics, may prevent acceptance into any other Radiologic Technology Program.   Note:  as if 12/31/21 ARRT will no longer allow see Advanced Placement (arrt.org)

All radiologic technology program courses must be taken in sequence, and each course must be completed with a minimum grade of "C" (75%). 

Applicants with prior training or experience in Radiologic Technology may petition for credit by examination for RT-A, RT#111, RT#106, and RT#107.  Each applicant will be evaluated on an individual basis.

 

Students are admitted into the program by an application process.  The application process is by annual submission. There is no waiting list.

A limited number of students are admitted into the program annually. Class size is determined by the availability of clinical space. Qualified applicants may submit their applications during the open application period during the fall semester. 

Applicants must complete all General Education and Program Major courses to receive the maximum points available for their coursework on the application.

This course provides a basic introduction to Radiologic Technology as a profession and the foundation skills necessary to prepare students who are planning to enter the A.S. Degree Program.

This course is a required pre-requisite course. This course is offered in the spring and fall semesters only.  It meets for 3.4 hours, one day per week, for 16 weeks. There are usually 3 -4 sections offered per semester, with at least one offered fully on-line.

RTEC-A course is a pre-requisite for the RT Program - and  must be completed at El Camino College -  Introductory courses taken at other institutions will not be considered for transfer, but may be considered towards additional points on the application - see application instructions for details.

The application form can be used as your academic plan to enter the radiology program and evaluate any college courses you may have already completed towards an A.S or higher degree.

You will need the new application form and your OFFICIAL transcripts on file in the RECORDS office, when you meet with one of the counselors listed below to have your coursework and GPA evaluated for the application.

Students must comply with the “Rules of Ethics” contained in the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists' (ARRT) Standard of Ethics.

The “Rules of Ethics” are minimally acceptable standards of professional conduct for all presently Registered Technologists and Applicants.

The “Rules of Ethics” are intended to promote the protection, safety and comfort of patients.

The ARRT may deny applications for certification if the applicant has been found guilty of dishonesty, fraud, deceit, acts which deceive the public, felony, child abuse, sex offender crimes; acts involving narcotics, dangerous drugs or devices, assault and/or battery and other crimes.

Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug is required for admission and continuation in all Health Sciences Programs.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals Organizations (JCAHO)requires verification of competency of all individuals who have direct contact with patients or employees; this includes students doing clinical rotations in the facility.  Competency extends beyond technical skills. 

The criminal background check, drug screening and other  policy and procedures for meeting this mandated prerequisite is outlined in the ECC Rad Tech Student Handbook and available the from the Program Director and this website. The student shall be responsible paying any associated costs of the annual  criminal background check, drug screening, TB testing and other related requirements from the Clinical Affiliates. 

JCAHO added a new standard for its accreditations involving personal background checks on all persons involved in direct patient care, which can include employees, volunteers and students. HR 1.20 & Title 5, section 58106 allows districts to establish limitations on enrollment for various reasons including to protect health and safety.
