A special PBS report recently aired, highlighting El Camino College's innovative First-Gen Initiative. The program "Inside California Education: Community Colleges - First in the Family" features several El Camino students sharing their first-gen stories, along with appearances from faculty and administrators. A national leader in supporting first-generation students, El Camino College is the only community college in the nation to be a part of the leadership component in First Forward, a program sponsored by The Center for First-generation Student Success, which works to increase the success of first-generation college students. An "Advisory Institution" participant in the inaugural cohort of First Forward Institutions, El Camino is also the only campus out of the 115 California Community Colleges to participate in this new and innovative program. Nearly 51% of El Camino College students identify as being first in their family to pursue a four-year degree. To support this student population, activities are planned throughout the year, such as First-Gen Awareness Week; professional development for faculty, staff, and administrators regarding first-gen issues; and a student symposium focused on student success programs that provide support to incoming first-gen students. All activities are designed to ensure students feel supported and welcome on the El Camino College campus.
