As a reminder, our Campuswide Lock Down - Shelter in Place exercise is scheduled for 9:40 to 9:50 a.m. and again from 7:10 to 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 3. The exercise will begin with notification via Nixle text messaging, email, Cisco phone speakers, and police car loudspeakers, stating:
"This is a drill. This is a drill. This is a Lock Down - Shelter in Place drill."
During this exercise, please stop what you're doing and consider where can you safely lock down or shelter in place. If you are in a lockable classroom or office, please lock the door. Turn off lights if possible and move out of the way from being seen if you can. Remain calm and quiet.
If your room cannot be locked, consider the idea of moving furniture in front of the door to make it harder for a person to enter. If working in an area where you can't lock down at your work station, consider planning ahead and find a place in your building where you can lock down and shelter in place. Campus Police will electronically secure the following buildings when the exercise begins and unlock them when the exercise is over: Humanities, Social Science, MBA, ITEC, CAT, and MESA/STEM Center.
For students and employees in the hallways, building captains and floor leaders will ask them to move to a secure area such as an empty classroom. Campus Police will do the same for students and employees outside. Campus Police will also assist SRC staff.
An announcement will inform the campus community when the exercise is over.
The purpose of this exercise is about planning a way you can safely secure yourself in an emergency. By conducting these exercises, we have an opportunity to become better prepared by working together.
Please consider discussing the exercise with your students and co-workers. Everyone is also asked to take the online survey so that we can improve on future exercises.
Everyone is also encouraged to view a 10-minute instructional video created by Ohio State University (https://youtu.be/9Z9zkU--FLQ) that discusses "Run" "Hide" "Fight" during an active shooter situation. If you can view this video before the drill, that would be good preparation. Our exercise will focus on the "Hide," or Lock Down - Shelter in Place aspect. Please feel free to print this information and share with others.
Door Lock Installation Update
The process to install door locks in classrooms across campus is continuing. At this point, all classroom doors that need new locks are being identified so they can be changed out. These locks will allow for the securing of classroom doors from within the classroom and are part of the overall plan for increasing campus safety. Lock installation is scheduled to be completed mainly during evenings and weekends; exact dates for installation have not been set.
