A task force was established in December 2016 to serve El Camino College's AB540 students, also known as "Dreamers." The task force works to coordinate efforts, provide information and resources, and connect those impacted with support. Goals have already been achieved, such as the creation of a web page (www.elcamino.edu/studentservices/fao/ab540/) featuring FAQs and other resources. A list of services with an emphasis on legal resources is in development.
In addition, campus events for both students and faculty provided information and addressed concerns, while workshops covered a variety of topics, such as Dream Act application assistance, financial aid and emotional concerns. Parallel efforts by students and the Student Equity Council have resulted in a new student empowerment dialogue series where a different theme is discussed each month. A new student club, "Students of Color United," has also been established. To connect with our community, outreach to high school counselors is underway, and a session on assisting AB540 students was offered at the recent Counselor Collaborative. In the works is a panel presentation of CSU Dream Center coordinators to help support students who are transferring.
