El Camino College Requires COVID-19 Vaccination
The six members of the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to require that all students, faculty, and staff be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus before the start of Winter classes. The decision was made during the Board’s regular public meeting Tuesday, Sept. 7.
All El Camino College employees must provide proof of vaccination by Monday, November 8; students have until Monday, January 3, 2022; the start of the Winter 2022 Session. Free Johnson & Johnson vaccines are available for all students, faculty and staff on weekdays at the Student Health Center. Appointments are suggested, however, drop-in services are also available.
The Board’s decision came after months of public discussions, input from faculty and staff, and monitoring of the spike in the number of positive cases reported on campus and throughout the County of Los Angeles as the “delta variant” of the COVID-19 virus continues to spread.
El Camino Community College District’s Superintendent/President Dr. Brenda Thames says that exemptions will be considered for medical conditions and religious beliefs.
“In accordance with existing state and local mandates and practices, accommodations will be considered for individuals who cannot be vaccinated,” explains Dr. Thames. “The prevalence of this virus dictates that we continue to offer instruction and student services in a variety of modalities and platforms that serve the diverse needs of our students.”
El Camino College campus remains open with student support services such as financial aid, academic advising, and student organizations available throughout the week. The Bookstore, Library, Student Health Services and Cashiers Office are open and serving students and staff. The Warrior Pantry has never closed and continues to distribute food and supplies to all students.
