November 22, 2024 Torrance, CA

El Camino College journalism students recently won numerous national and regional awards for their work on campus publications.

At the Fall 2024 National College Media Convention, El Camino publications brought home impressive awards in the two-year college division, including first-place wins for “Best College Media Group of the Year” and best general news email newsletter. Warrior Life magazine took third, and the newspaper website received an honorable mention.

The convention was based in New Orleans earlier this month, a combined meeting of the College Media Association and Associated Collegiate Press. Individual student highlights from the event include first-place awards for best magazine cover, Greg Fontanilla and Dylan Elliot; best magazine news page/spread, Kim McGill; best enterprise coverage of diversity, Kim McGill; best profile, Erica Lee; best special section (four pages or fewer), Delfino Camacho, Kim McGill, Monroe Morrow and Ma. Gisela Ordenes; best general news photo, Ethan Cohen; and best photo portrait, Khoury Williams.

El Camino students also won numerous honors at the 2024 Associated Collegiate Press awards, including second place for reporter of the year, given to Ma. Gisela Ordenes. Second place was also awarded in the digital newsletter category.

Additional awards for student publications and individuals were received at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Publication Awards, announced at the SoCal Regional Conference at California State University, Northridge in October. The Union newspaper, Warrior Life magazine and eccunion.com all received meritorious general excellence recognition. A first-place award honored Warrior Life’s overall magazine design/layout. Also winning first-place recognition was Katie Volk for a feature story, in addition to Kim McGill, illustration, and Dylan Elliot and Greg Fontanilla, magazine cover design.

The Union and Warrior Life are produced entirely by students enrolled in journalism classes. Greg Fontanilla is the editor-in-chief; Angel Pasillas is news editor.
