El Camino College Board of Trustees Seeks Applicants to Fill Vacant Area 5 Seat

Candidates must submit applications by December 12

The El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees is seeking applicants to serve as an appointed member to fill a vacancy until the next regularly scheduled election for governing members, in November 2026.

A qualified applicant must be appointed to serve the remainder of the four-year term, which expires in November 2026. Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the El Camino Community College District and Trustee Area 5 (which includes Torrance and Redondo Beach), and a registered voter.

The vacancy was created by Trustee Clifford Numark, who recently announced his resignation as he intends to move out of the area. Numark served the district since 2013 and is known for his role in advocating for innovation in programs such as dual enrollment, open educational resources, and enhancing the connection between El Camino and area communities.

The five-member Board of Trustees is responsible for the performance of the El Camino Community College District, which encompasses five unified and high school districts, 12 elementary school districts and nine cities - a population of nearly 533,000 residents. The District provides high-quality educational, career training, and basic needs services to the communities of El Segundo, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Torrance.

The Board is seeking candidates who have the skills, ability, and time to fulfill the duties of being a member of the Board that, acting as a unit:

  • Sets the policy direction.
  • Employs a chief executive officer as the institutional leader.
  • Acts as community bridge and buffer.
  • Establishes the climate in which educational goals are accomplished.
  • Defines legal, ethical, and prudent standards for college operations.
  • Assures fiscal health and stability.
  • Monitors institutional performance.

In addition, trustees often serve as representatives or participants in activities involving the college, including commencement and community events.

The El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees generally meets on the third Monday of each month at 4 p.m.
