El Camino College Art Gallery to Present Special Events Through March

The El Camino College Art Gallery will present special events and exhibits that focus on mental health throughout March. Two prolific guest speakers will share insights into several factors that impact mental health and student success; both events are free and open to the public.  

Dr. Wendy WalshDr. Wendy Walsh will lead a discussion and Q&A centered on “Systemic Sexism and Depression: How Gender Inequality affects Mental Health” at 1 p.m. March 10 inside the Art Gallery. The event is free and open to the public; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Walsh is a trusted voice on love and the science of human connection. She is a psychology professor at California State University, Channel Islands and for more than a decade, she hosted “The Dr. Wendy Walsh Show” on iHeart Radio’s KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles. She’s also had a three-decade media career, been an Emmy-nominated co-host on “The Doctors,” was an anchor on the nationally syndicated show “Extra,” and served as a recurring commentator on CNN, HLN, and Fox News. In 2017, she was named a Time Magazine Person of the Year for her voice in the #MeToo movement. 

Dr. Comfort O. OkpalaDr. Comfort O. Okpala will address “Systemic Racism and Depression” as it relates to education and higher learning opportunities at 1p.m. March 19 in the Art Gallery. All are invited to attend this free event; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  

A faculty member at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Okpala is an experienced educational leader and leadership development trainer. She will lead a conversation that is based on her exploration of the interconnectedness of the transfer student experience and used it as a foundational framework to inform the administrative leadership on a North Carolina, midsized, historically Black college of the existing transfer students experience. This study focused on the experiences of the transfer students, the factors that affected their retention, and what the students believed university leadership could do to ensure their success.

This moving exhibit was curated by social activist Bob Zaugh and ECC Art Gallery Director Michael Miller and features works by world-renown artists, all of whom utilize art as a means of addressing their personal experiences with depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.
