Please join El Camino College’s Social Justice Center, Student Equity & Achievement, African American Employees Network (AFAM), ASO, Art Gallery, Library & Learning Resources, Project Success, Black Student Union, and the Black Student Success Center as we celebrate Black History Month.

This year's theme is "Black Resilience: Honoring Legacy, Perseverance, and Beauty."

Everyone is invited to celebrate Black History Month! Check out the variety of lively and educational events throughout the month of February.

History

The event grew out of “Negro History Week”, created in February 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Since 1976, every U.S. president officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, devote a month to celebrating Black history.

Taste of Soul and Mini Black Market Flea

Taste of Soul is a campus-wide lunch in honor of Black History Month featuring delicious soul food by Dulan's Catering Service. It has been a traditional event at El Camino College for over 15 years! This event's goals are to create a sense of community between students, faculty and staff and to expose them to cuisine, business, and artistry within the local Black Community.

This year, we are partnering with local Black-owned businesses for a unique “Mini-Black Flea,” outside during the campus-wide Taste of Soul luncheon in celebration of Black History Month. This will be an opportunity for the ECC community to get exposure to local Black owned businesses, artists, non-profit organizations as well as campus resources and student clubs. We will focus on four areas that we believe are essential to strengthening our Black community: Health and Wellness; Arts and Creativity; Clothing and Expression; Advocacy and Awareness.
