The Department of Mathematics offers a comprehensive program, which includes everything from remedial mathematics and beginning algebra through four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.
Degrees
The Department of Mathematics offers the Associate of Science (AS-T).
Associate of Science (AS-T)
This degree is designed for students planning to transfer with a major in mathematics. The student will acquire the ability to apply the principles of differential and integral calculus of one and several variables, differential equations, and linear algebra. Competencies will be assessed through problem solving involving limits; derivatives and integrals of real- and vector- valued functions of one and several variables; areas and volumes; line, surface, and volume integrals; numerical methods; sequences and series; ordinary differential equations; power series solutions; Laplace transforms; eigenvectors; vector spaces; and application problems. Students will have the ability to utilize computer algebra systems in problem solving.
Student placement in a math course is determined by multiple measures as mandated by AB 705. A student who has not been placed into MATH 190 will need to take the prerequisite courses: MATH 170 and MATH 180. Students who wish to review math skills are encouraged to sign up for non-credit Math Academy courses during the winter and summer sessions. This is a free course available to all students!
Liberal Studies (Elementary Teaching) Major:
Students with this major should complete Mathematics 110 and 116. Mathematics 150
is recommended.
Preparation for the Transfer Major:
For information on specific university major requirements, please obtain a transfer
curriculum guide sheet in the Counseling Services Center, consult with your counselor, or visit the Transfer Center. You may use the transfer major requirements to help you fulfill your associate degree
requirements.
Tutoring & Courses
Free tutoring services (both drop-in and computerized tutoring) are available for all students registered in a Department of Mathematics math class. For a list of course offerings, go to the Catalog.
El Camino College Major Requirements
At least 8 units for this degree must be completed at El Camino College.
Complete the following courses (20 units):
- MATH 190: Single Variable Calculus and Analytic Geometry I (5 units)
- MATH 191: Single Variable Calculus and Analytic Geometry II (5 units)
- MATH 220: Multi-Variable Calculus (5 units)
- MATH 270: Differential Equations with Linear Algebra (5 units)
And one course from (4 to 5 units):
- CSCI 1: Problem Solving and Program Design using C++ (4 units)
- CSCI 2: Introduction to Data Structures (5 units)
- CSCI 3: Computer Programming with Java (4 units)
- MATH 150: Elementary Statistics with Probability (4 units)
- MATH 150H: Honors Elementary Statistics with Probability (4 units)
- MATH 210: Introduction to Discrete Structures (5 units)
- PHYS 1A: Mechanics of Solids (4 units)
