Associate in Science and Certificate of Achievement

The Marketing Department at El Camino College offers a variety of courses for students pursuing a career in marketing, management, sales, advertising, communications, and public relations and a variety of other fields in the business world.

Students will learn the skills and techniques needed for successful careers in marketing, which connects a company or non-profit group to specific consumer groups. Through the department’s courses, students will study target marketing, product development, customer needs, advertising, basic accounting, and communications.

Marketing careers include positions in sales, product development, management, research, retail, advertising, and distribution. Marketing professionals not only work in the business setting, but their services are also needed in areas such as health care, government, colleges and universities, museums, and the armed forces. According to several research studies, marketing positions are also the fastest way to landing top management jobs.

With the information industry growing at breakneck speed, there is a great demand for marketing professionals who can help businesses develop strategies to convey their messages efficiently.

Degree Programs

The Marketing major for the Associate in Science Degree provides students with a broad foundation to pursue many careers in marketing. Students can earn a degree in marketing after completing 60 semester units, including the General Education requirements listed in the El Camino College Catalog.

  • Written Business Communications (BUS 108; formerly BUS 28)
  • Marketing (BUS 110; formerly BUS 14)
  • Advertising (BUS 112; formerly BUS 12) 
  • Human Relations in Organizations (BUS 122; formerly BUS 22)
  • Computer Information Systems (CIS 13)
  • Business Law (LAW 5)

6-7 Units from:

  • Financial Accounting (BUS 150; formerly BUS 1A) -or- Accounting for Small Business (BUS 126; formerly BUS 11)
  • Principles of Retailing Management (BUS 119; formerly BUS 19) -or- Small Business Entrepreneurship (BUS 124; formerly BUS 24)
Total Units: 27-28

 

Certificate Programs

A Certificate of Achievement will be granted upon completion of the required courses and a minimum of 9 units must be completed at El Camino College. Students who anticipate employment with large businesses are advised to take Business 112. Those interested in smaller enterprises should complete Business 124.
