Community-Oriented Policing Unit

The El Camino Police Department has adopted the community-oriented policing philosophy throughout our organization. Community policing promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem-solving tactics and community-police partnerships.

Community Policing

A fundamental shift from traditional reactive policing, community policing stresses the prevention of crime before it occurs. Community policing is an integral part of combating crime and improving the quality of life in the nation's cities, towns and on college and university campuses.

Core components of community policing include partnering with the community, problem solving, and transforming policing agencies to support and empower front line officers, decentralize command and encourage innovative problem solving.

The unit has pamphlets available on various crime prevention topics that are freely available to everyone. Topics include police protection and security services, general crime prevention techniques, rape and sexual assault, date rape, drug and alcohol abuse and cyber crime. The unit also conducts class presentations each semester on the relevant topics.
