Campus Crime Reporting Procedures

Working together, safety at El Camino College is every one's business. No community, of course, can be totally risk free in today's society.  Students, faculty and visitors are partners in creating an atmosphere that is safe and conducive for teaching and learning. The El Camino Police Department encourages the reporting of any crime or suspicious activity by contacting the police department. The El Camino Police Department is the primary agency for reporting and investigating all crimes that occur on the El Camino campus. Any instances of criminal activity occurring at El Camino College should be reported to the El Camino Police Department.

You may contact the police department by calling 310-660-3100, dialing 3100 from an on-campus District telephone, dialing 911 from any campus pay phone, using one of the many "Blue Phones" that are located throughout the campus or by coming into the police department which is located in Parking Lot K at the corner of Redondo Beach Blvd. and Crenshaw Blvd.

When a crime is reported to the El Camino College Police Department, a police officer will take a report outlining the circumstances of the incident, as well as any other pertinent information. The report is forwarded to the investigations unit, where the investigator reviews the report and evidence with the intent to determine the cause and perpetrator(s) of the crime. In all instances of criminal activity, the police department works to determine the exact nature and perpetrator(s) of the crime for the purpose of developing a viable criminal case to be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for prosecution. In all cases where a student is considered a suspect, the police department will also forward the case information to the Dean of Students for review and action as a possible violation of the Standards of Student Conduct. The police department does not accept voluntary, confidential reports. The police department does encourage professional counselors to inform persons they are counseling, of the desirability to make a formal crime report with the police department.

The ability of the police to locate and arrest criminals often depends on the thoroughness and accuracy of the report you submit. The following information checklist should be used for reporting both emergency and non-emergency crimes:

Location

  • Where they are calling from
  • Where the incident is occurring

Time Frame

  • When the incident occurred if the incident is not occurring now

Nature of Call

  • What is going on (altercation between two people, etc.)
  • What type (verbal/physical)

Involvement

  • Is the caller involved or just a witness

Description

  • Sex (Male or Female)
  • Race (Black, White, Hispanic or Asian)
  • Approximate Age
  • Top (Shirt/Blouse) Color
  • Bottom (Pants) Color
  • Approximate Height (Guess of height or ‘taller’/’shorter’
  • Approximate Weight (Heavy, Thin, etc.)
  • Hair (Color, Style)
  • Backpack (Color)

Weapons

  • If someone has a weapon and what kind

After Information is Provided

  • Advise the dispatcher if you will stand by or if you are leaving the area
  • Advise if you want an officer to contact you regarding the call

NOTE – Not all calls are the same and additional questions may be asked. It may seem like a lot of questions to the caller, however they are to help prepare the officers for what they will be encountering. The information also helps the dispatcher if they need to call for other resources.

The caller should also wait for the dispatcher to ask the questions. The caller needs to be as short and to the point regarding the description, while answering the questions to the best of their ability, so that the a call can be created and so that officers can be dispatched.

Maintenance of District Facilities

The El Camino College Facilities, Planning, and Services Division (FP&S) is responsible for the maintenance of district facilities. The Police Department and FP&S Division work closely to insure the district facilities are maintained for safety and security.
