El Camino College Police Department reports that most bikes stolen from campus locations were not locked or locked with simple chains. The following information will help you keep you keep your bike secure.
How to Keep Your Bike Secure
Always lock your bicycle: Most thefts can be prevented by using an adequate lock and properly securing the bicycle to an approved parking facility such as a bicycle rack. It is best to lock the frame and wheels by using a U-Lock and a six-foot cable.
Record your bike's ID: Write down the unique manufacturer's frame number. You'll find it stamped on your bicycle frame. Store it in a safe place along with a photograph of your bike.
Immediately report a bicycle theft: If your bicycle is stolen, report it immediately to the El Camino Police. You will need to complete a police report that specifies the location where the bicycle was parked and whether or not it was licensed.
Retrieve an impounded bicycle: If your bicycle was parked illegally or chained to a pole or railing, or if it appears to have been abandoned, it may have been impounded. To retrieve your bicycle, contact Parking Services Department.

Bicycle Registrations
Registering your bike creates an "ownership paper trail"—valuable documentation that improves the chances of recovering a stolen bike, wherever it is found. The cost is $10 for 10 years of protection. Register with the National Bike Registry online or visit the Parking Services office for assistance.
Bicycle Regulations
- It is illegal for cyclists under the age of 18 to ride a bicycle without a helmet.
- Wear your helmet for protection at all times.
- It is illogical for cyclists of any age to ride a bicycle without a helmet.
- Safety matters at every age.
- Always lock your bicycle on approved bicycle racks positioned throughout campus.
- Do not park, or lock, your bicycle in any of the following pedestrian areas (Note:
If a bicycle is parked in violation of this rule, it will be impounded and the owner
will be subject to penalties and fees):
- Pedestrian pathways or passageways
- Poles or hard rails such as those on or near stairways and walkways
- Disabled Access Ramp
- Bicycle riders must obey all stop signs, traffic signals and other traffic signs.
- Always remember to give pedestrians the right of way.
- It is illegal to operate a bicycle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Abandoned bicycles may be subject to impound.
