Student Spotlight: Haruka Kanemura

ECC art major designed and produced large-scale mural

ECC art student Haruka Kanemura’s mural on campus is a tribute to friendship, diversity and unity. Those themes are exactly how the large-scale piece came to life on a blank wall in the college’s Student Activities Center. After her design was selected, a group of friends volunteered hundreds of hours to make the mural a reality.

The project was funded by a grant from the ECC Associated Students Organization. Haruka said the goal of her design was to show how ECC provides a welcoming community for all students to reach their goals.

“When I first came on campus, I was really fascinated by how El Camino College provides a safe learning environment for a wide variety of students,” Haruka said. “There was no limit to the age range; people with disabilities were welcomed, and students have various cultural backgrounds. So many people come together at El Camino College, and we appreciate the differences and connect – that is my favorite thing about the college and that is what I am trying to say with the mural.”
