Safety Matters

imgWelcome Interim Chief Lopez
Ruben Lopez became El Camino’s interim chief of police on July 1, 2024, filling the position left by Chief Michael Trevis, who retired at the end of June. Lopez joined the El Camino College Police Department in August 2006 as a police officer. He spent the next 18 years in various roles, including field training officer for new recruits, detective, terrorism liaison officer, and baton instructor. Just before he became interim chief, Lopez supervised both sworn and nonsworn personnel as an El Camino College Police sergeant, reporting directly to the chief.

An El Camino College alumnus, Lopez also graduated from Gardena High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in business management from the University of Phoenix. He holds California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certificates for basic, intermediate, advanced, and supervisory police training. As interim chief, Lopez leads a department that plays a critical role in the implementation of the ECC Campus Safety Plan, and the rollout of the new RAVE communication alert system.
