Robotics Exhibition Invites El Camino College Community to Compete

May 24, 2023 Torrance, CA

El Camino College invites all students, faculty, and staff to join a Robotics Exhibition scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 31 on the first floor of the ITEC Building. Live presentations run from noon to 1 p.m., where participants show off their original inventions and compete for a grand prize.

Presented by the college’s Industry and Technology Division, the competition is designed to showcase a variety of creative robotics projects from the El Camino community. Entries are due May 26 and must be approved in advance through a poster board or presentation that explains the objective and design process of the robot.

“The members of the Robotics Club have some great projects to showcase this semester and are making great improvements,” said Chris Hirunthanakorn, a robotics faculty member, and Robotics Club adviser at El Camino College. “We are also expanding beyond just VEX robotics with the work done on the BattleBots that were acquired with the support of the Inter-Club Council.”

El Camino has a long tradition of offering robotics opportunities to future engineers and scientists. Students in Hirunthanakorn’s class construct and test prototype robots while learning about fabrication technologies. Basic electronics and programming, electro-mechanical assembly, and micro-controller operation are also part of the curriculum. Robots are usually made entirely from scratch, then programmed to allow them to operate under preset commands. Students can also explore different career options.

Additional opportunities can be found with the El Camino Robotics Club, which competes with other colleges and hosts events on campus. Most club members are pursuing STEM-related education and careers.

El Camino Community College District encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation, or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact chirunthanakorn@elcamino.edu as soon as possible, but no later than seven days prior to the event.
