Distinguished Faculty and Staff Members of 2021 Announced

El Camino College proudly announces that Claudia Striepe and De Von Lamar Scott are the recipients of the 2020-2021 Distinguished Faculty and Staff awards respectively, earlier this month via campus-wide communication.

“El Camino has some of the finest and most dedicated faculty and staff in the entire state,” states President/Superintendent Dena Maloney. “The passion and commitment that Claudia and De Von have for our students are second to none. They are the backbone of our students’ success stories.”

Claudia Striepe joined the El Camino College faculty as an instruction librarian in 1998. For more than two decades, she has helped countless El Camino students become critical thinkers who are prepared to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting. Driven by the belief that people learn best by being an active partner in their own education, Striepe engages students in hands-on activities, search strategies, and insights into their own perceptions and experiences so they can find the resources they need.

In addition to her primary responsibility as an instruction librarian, Striepe works on the library reference desk, conducts workshops, serves on committees, and is currently the vice president of the El Camino College Academic Senate’s Educational Policies Committee. Striepe also co-chaired El Camino College’s Accreditation Committee, which drafted the Institutional Self-Evaluation Report.  The College was fully reaccredited for a seven year cycle in January 2021. 

De Von Lamar Scott is an admission specialist in Admissions & Records who truly embodies the “Students First” philosophy at El Camino College. From his first days in his position, he reorganized and communicated with faculty and staff to improve work flow and campus operations, leading to new solutions regarding registration issues. Colleagues say that Scott is always ready to meet students where they are, at any time. For example, he has made himself available throughout evenings and weekends for the International Student Program so he would be able to assist students in different time zones. 

Scott is also known for his outstanding problem-solving skills and his famous saying, “Say no more. I got it.” One faculty member noted, “even if he is not able to ‘fix’ every problem he tries, he communicates with clarity and kindness and gives advice for future ideas.” 

Each year, El Camino faculty and staff nominate a member of the campus community who has demonstrated significant contributions to student success, the college, and their colleagues. Ms. Striepe and Mr. Scott were honored in a virtual reception on Wednesday, May 5 at 1 p.m. via Zoom. They will also be recognized during the college’s virtual commencement ceremony, set for June 11.
