El Camino College to Host Black El Camino College Expo

March 29, 2023 Torrance, CA

A first-ever Black El Camino College Expo is scheduled for 5:30–8 p.m. April 5 in the college’s East Dining Room, designed to showcase resources available at El Camino College for current, prospective, and incoming new students who identify as Black/African American.

Organized in partnership with the college’s Black Student Success Center, the expo will include campus tours, application/enrollment assistance, transfer and financial aid resource workshops, a resource fair, an opportunity to speak with counselors, and more. Refreshments will be served. The event is open to all future Warriors, from those considering college to those ready to register for classes. Current students seeking assistance can contact bssc@elcamino.edu.

“We are excited to welcome prospective students to the Black El Camino College Expo, one many initiatives at ECC designed to support the success of Black/African American students,” expresses El Camino College President Dr. Brenda Thames. “Our Black Student Success programs are designed to close equity gaps, build community, and a sense of belonging here at ECC. Events like these celebrate our students, acknowledge their journeys, and let them know that we’re glad they are here.”

El Camino is also preparing to celebrate the annual Black Student Success Week next month, with events and opportunities to share research findings and insights to improving success among Black and African American students at California Community Colleges. A highlight of the week is the grand opening of a new Black Student Success Center, offering academic counseling services, basic needs support, community building activities, and personal and professional development opportunities.

The El Camino Community College District encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation, or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact outreach@elcamino.edu as soon as possible, but no later than seven days prior to the event.

The Black El Camino College Expo is free, but participants must register. To prepare for this event, students are asked to apply to El Camino College. Those who have already applied should complete the English & Mathematics Placement Survey and Orientation, found on the student’s MyECC account.

Assistance is available through the Welcome Center, which offers in-person and virtual support. Prospective students are also invited to bring family members to the expo.
