El Camino College Club Offers Opportunities for Families to Connect and Learn
El Camino College invites families from throughout the South Bay to events and activities designed to build a support system for parenting students, caregivers, faculty, staff, their children, and all parenting community members. Participants can find support and learn about available resources through a series of parent meetings and playgroups for children.
Parent Café meetings are available each spring semester, a series of discussions created to give a space for parents and caregivers to listen to and support each other in either an in-person or Zoom format. Presented by El Camino’s Child Development Club and Student Health Services, each Parent Café is open to the public and designed to connect the college’s parenting community to valuable, relevant resources in a safe, nonjudgmental space.
Upcoming Parent Café meetings are scheduled for 5-7 p.m. May 9 via Zoom (ID: 846 0133 8790); in-person meetings are from 5-7 p.m. April 19; 10 a.m. to noon May 21; and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 3 in the college’s Social Justice Center, Communications Building, Room 204.
The Childhood Education Department and Child Development Club also organize monthly “You and Me Playgroup” gatherings for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers to play, sing, and read with fellow parenting community members. All youngsters and their caregivers are invited to attend these playgroup meetups from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 4 and June 1 on the Library Lawn.
In addition to hosting playgroup sessions, Child Development Club members organize and attend club meetings featuring guest speakers and presentations on current topics in childhood education. Attendees receive certificates for professional development.
El Camino’s Childhood Education Department offers degree and certificate programs where students learn developmental theories that help refine their ability to observe and assess children’s physical, socioemotional and cognitive skills. After completing the curriculum, students are prepared for careers in private or public programs that serve infants, toddlers, preschoolers, children with special needs, families, or children in before- and after-school care. In the transfer degree option, students can continue their studies at a four-year college or university.
