El Camino College to Present Music Faculty Showcase

The wide range of talent and skill among El Camino College’s music faculty will be featured in an upcoming concert to kick off the Center for the Arts’ fall 2022 season, which includes an exciting lineup of live, in-person performances. The El Camino College “Music Faculty Showcase” is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m.in the Campus Theatre; tickets are on sale now.

The showcase roster includes instrumental, vocal, and piano performances by college faculty, who will present popular classics, introduce original compositions, and debut new arrangements. Some of the evening’s highlights include piano solos by Dr. Polli Chambers Salazar performing “Under a Montana Sky” by Dr. Patrick Schulz, ECC music theory professor, and “Summerland” by William Grant Still, a prolific composer and part of the Harlem Renaissance.

A faculty woodwind quintet ​will ​perform two world premieres: three pieces from “Sketchbook Gems” by Dr. Deon Nielsen Price, former adjunct professor of music, and “Adoration of the Magi” by early 20th century composer Ottorino Respighi, arranged by recently ​retired Director of Instrumental Music, Dr. Dane Teter. This arrangement for a woodwind quintet and piano will feature applied music faculty Dr. Chambers-Salazar, Pat Maki, Tawnee Lillo, and Dr. Berkeley Price, ECC’s Division of Fine Arts dean. Other musical performances include a guitar solo by professor Jon Minei, director of guitar studies, and a set by the Faculty Jazz Combo with Dr. David Moyer, director of jazz studies and instrumental music, and featuring the applied jazz trio of Dean Koba, Corbin Jones, and Adam Hersh.

Dr. Kevin Blickfeldt, director of vocal studies, ​will perform two art songs from “Musique Anodine” by Gioachino Rossini. Erin Wood, applied voice instructor, will perform “Song to the Moon” from the opera “Rusalka” by Antonin Dvorak; also on the schedule is an appearance by the ECC Chorale under the direction of Dr. Joanna Nachef, El Camino professor and director of choral and orchestral activities.
