Shop Around the Corner

El Camino College Theatre Department to Perform “The Shop Around the Corner”

November 29, 2021 Torrance, CA

El Camino College’s Center for the Arts will present a live, in-person student performance in the Campus Theatre this fall. Students in the college’s Theatre Department will perform “The Shop Around the Corner” as a live “radio play” in the style of an old-fashioned radio show, complete with microphones, soap commercials, and live sound effects.

Set in a 1930s European perfume shop in Budapest, Hungary, shop clerks Amalia and Georg often don't see eye to eye. After both respond to a "lonely hearts” advertisement in the newspaper (a pre-internet equivalent of a dating app), they now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown. As the play unfolds, Amalia and Georg discover the identity of their true loves, along with twists and turns along the way.

“The Shop Around the Corner” is a warm, romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. The play “Parfumerie,” on which it is based, has inspired many adaptations, including the Broadway musical “She Loves Me” and the film “You've Got Mail” starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

Performances are 8 p.m. Dec. 3, 4, 10 and 11 and 3 p.m. Dec. 5 and 12, live on the Campus Theatre stage. For ticket information, please visit the El Camino College Center for the Arts Ticket Office on campus or online at www.elcamino.edu/campus-life/arts/.

All guests must wear a mask while on campus and complete El Camino’s entry screening protocols when they arrive: www.elcamino.edu/wbtw/entry-process.php. Socially distanced theater seating is required.
