El Camino College Theater Department to Present “Everybody”

May 10, 2022 Torrance, CA

The El Camino College Theater Department will present the play “Everybody” in the Campus Theatre this spring. Performances are set for 8 p.m. May 13, 14, 20 and 21, and at 3 p.m. May 15.

The play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is a modern retelling of the 15th century morality play, “Everyman,” and is an immersive, metaphysical experiment about the journey toward death. Discussions center on what it means to live, what it means to die, and the journey in between.

In an interesting casting twist, each performance features actors in different roles, chosen by lottery. At least three cast members know all the lines in the play and will perform a new role each time. Immersive theater techniques, dance, voiceovers, and voiceover scenes done in complete darkness are also part of the show.

Director Jayongela Wilder said that Jacobs-Jenkins, a celebrated Obie and MacArthur award-winning playwright, transforms the play into a playful, thoughtful, and engaging theater surprise for the stage.

“It is an honor to direct this brilliant piece at El Camino College,” she added. “It is a timeless play that questions the meaning of life and what happens after we die. It serves as a constant reminder to cherish the moments we have. Life is truly what matters, not what people leave behind, but how they’ve lived. So, live life to the fullest!”
