El Camino College Schedules “Ageism Awareness Week”

September 28, 2023 Torrance, CA

El Camino College invites community members of all ages to celebrate the contributions of older adults, while also recognizing the negative impact of ageism and its many stereotypes. “Ageism Awareness Week” is scheduled for Oct. 3-5, with a series of events designed to show how this kind of discrimination can affect a person’s self-esteem, ability to find employment, and overall quality of life.

Sponsored by El Camino’s Community Education Young@Heart 50+ program in partnership with the college’s Social Justice Center and LGBTQIA+ PRIDE Center, Ageism Awareness Week coincides with Ageism Awareness Day on Oct. 7 and features informative films, discussions, and a platform to explore discuss the inequality and bias that ageism creates.

FILM
“Gen Silent,” LGBT Aging DocumentaryIn partnership with ECC’s LGBTQIA+ PRIDE Center
Wednesday, October 4 // noon-1:30 p.m. // ECC Social Justice Center Lounge

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender older people who fought the first battles for equality now face so much fear of religious objection, bullying, and abuse, that many are hiding their identities. Thousands are dying earlier than their straight counterparts because of added isolation and fear. This critically acclaimed documentary follows the lives of LGBTQ older people who must choose if they will go back into the closet to survive an often-hostile care system.

FILM
“Golden: the End of Ageism”
Thursday, October 5 // noon-1:30 p.m. // ECC Social Justice Center

Often called “the last acceptable bias,” why does ageism remain OK after so much progress has been made with other “isms,” such as racism and sexism? After all, not one of us is getting any younger. Yet the damaging stereotypes persist in the workplace, health care, media and beyond. For minorities and other groups, age bias is discrimination “double jeopardy.” There is a growing global movement to end age bias and reawaken the joys of getting older. This informative film highlights this new frontier in civil rights.

The El Camino Community College District encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation, or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact Community Education as soon as possible, but no later than seven days prior to the event.
