Brett C. S. Roberts Appointed El Camino Community College District Trustee

May 17, 2023 Torrance, CA

The El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees made a provisional appointment of Inglewood resident Brett C.S. Roberts to serve as the Area One Trustee until the next regularly scheduled election for Governing Board members on November 5, 2024.

Trustees made the appointment after interviewing seven candidates at a special board meeting on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 4 p.m. Last month, the Board solicited applicants from Trustee Area One (which includes Inglewood and Ladera Heights) to serve the remainder of the term vacated by Kenneth A. Brown on March 23. Mr. Roberts was officially sworn in by El Camino College President/CEO Dr. Brenda Thames at the May 12 special board meeting, and later ceremonially sworn in by Inglewood Mayor James Butts at the May 15 regular board meeting. Both meetings were open to the public.

Mr. Roberts has worked as a community relations officer and local government affairs manager for L.A. Metro since 2019, currently overseeing three capital projects throughout Los Angeles County. His professional portfolio includes extensive experience in marketing communications with the County of Los Angeles and American Honda Motor Corporation before joining the communications team at L.A. Metro, where he developed marketing campaigns for the recently opened Crenshaw/LAX transit line. Mr. Roberts was named to Mass Transit Magazine’s “40 Under 40 in Public Transportation—Best and Brightest” list in 2016 for his leadership in community engagement.

Mr. Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and public relations from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, and a master’s degree in business administration from the Graziadio School of Business and Management from Pepperdine University.

In addition to his marketing and communications specialties, Mr. Roberts has served on the City of Inglewood’s Parking and Traffic Commission since 2017, and was honored with the Los Angeles Vanguard Award as one of Los Angeles’s “100 Most Influential African Americans” in 2015 and 2017.

Mr. Roberts’ provisional appointment becomes permanent 30 days from May 12, unless a petition calling for a special election containing a sufficient number of signatures is filed in the office of the county superintendent of schools within that time frame.
