Pride Week Celebration Planned at El Camino College for May 20-24
El Camino College has a variety of events planned for Pride Week, scheduled for May 20-24. This festive week full of lively games and activities celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community at El Camino, while embracing and supporting their journey toward equality and acceptance.
New this year, Pride Week will include a “Walk in My Shoes” installation, comprised of shoes that symbolize the women, transwomen, nonbinary, and girls who have died because of femicide.
A collaboration between ECC student and curator Dulce Stein, students in faculty member Lawrence Ramirez’s museum studies class, and the LGBTQIA+ Pride Center, the “Walk in My Shoes” installation will accept donations of new or gently shoes from the college and community through May 21 in the Social Justice Center. While viewing the display, visitors who need a pair of shoes are invited to take them. Leftover shoes will be donated to El Camino’s Warrior Closet in the hopes that these items left behind can serve someone else, ensuring the lives that were lost too soon can continue walking on. The project is designed to honor the lives lost to LGBTQIA+ hate crimes, while giving back to the community.
Donations to El Camino’s Queer is Love Scholarship will also be accepted during Pride Week. This scholarship was established to help advance the educational goals and dreams of El Camino’s LGBTQIA+ students. Many queer, transgender, and nonbinary students are often in great need of financial support and have access to limited opportunities.
