A Celebration of Chicano Culture 2022

As in previous years, speakers and performers for the spring 2022 events will include various noted Chicano scholars and artists. All events are free, open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to attend!

A variety of events will be hosted including:

  • An afternoon with Chicano activist Dr. José Ángel Gutiérrez
  • Mexican indigenous artwork by Gabriela Malinalxochitl
  • Conversation about Chicano theatre and identity with Dr. Jorge Huerta and Luis Valdez
  • Poetry discussion with literary artist Matt Sedillo
  • Traditional Mexican music and dance

Dr. José Ángel Gutiérrez, a primary figure of the Chicano Movement and founder of the Raza Unida Party, will speak on identity and activism.

Chicano scholar, author, and theater director, Dr. Jorge Huerta will engage in dialogue with renowned Chicano playwright and film director, Luis Valdez, whose works include the play Zoot Suit and the film La Bamba.

Xipe-Totec (Danza Azteca), Nuestras Raíces (Folklórico Dance Company) and Conjunto Hueypan (Son Jarocho Music)

Aztec and Mexican folkloric dance will be performed by Xipe Totec and Nuestras Raíces. Live son jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico to be performed by Conjunto Hueyapan.
