Students Vote Project

The Secretary of State of California launched the Students Vote Project (SVP) in 2016. Based on the passage of AB 963: The Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act in 2019, El Camino College formed the SVP Committee to strengthen and coordinate campus efforts to increase student voter registration and turnout for all elections. SVP is a collaborative effort between the Associated Students Organization (ASO) and the Office of Public Information and Government Relations that aims to increase Civic Engagement and Voter Empowerment - core tenets of ASO's mission and vision.

Ballot Bowl 2024

As part of the bi-annual competition known as Ballot Bowl, the Associated Students of El Camino College and the larger campus community hosted a series of events aimed at empowering El Camino students to register to vote. We partnered with local non-profits and national organizations such as the League of Women Voters of Torrance as well as VoteVotaVote. Requirements for the Ballot Bowl are guided by the California Secretary of State and the Students Vote Project team. Campuses participating are evaluated for statewide awards related to voter turnout, registration, and advocacy plans. Among all 117 California Community College (CCC) Campuses, El Camino College was awarded "Best Civic and Voter Empowerment Action Plan" for the 2024 Ballot Bowl Competition.

Best Civic Plan Ribbon

In 2014, 52% of students registered in California which is 20 points below any other age group.  Only 8% voted (A Band of Voters).  This is a key reason for the passage of AB963 and thus, the formation of the SVP Committee.
