Registration and Classes
When you’re new to college life, all the academic-speak can be a bit confusing. The rules and guidelines below explain some of the key phrases you’ll see as you build your schedule and submit your class list.
Registration Appointments
Before you can start the registration process, you must have a reservation time assigned by the Admissions Office. This is the specific day and hour you can log into the registration system.

El Camino follows state regulations to determine priority registration:
- Special registration assistance to the handicapped or disadvantaged students as defined by statute for the purpose of providing equalization of education.
- For all other students, first priority is given to continuing students; second priority is new and re-admit students.

Before the registration period for each semester or summer session, El Camino publishes a Schedule of Classes listing the courses offered, general registration procedures and placement and college ability tests.
Number of Classes
Your program of studies will vary according to your individual need and objectives.
- Maximum: 18 units without a physical education class and 19 units with a physical education class.
- Minimum: 12 units per semester for full-time status.
If you’d like to take more than the maximum units, you can file a petition through the Counseling Services Division. You should have at least 15 transferable units in one semester with a 2.5 GPA and an overall GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for overload.
For the six-week summer session, if at least one unit of physical education, the maximum program of study is 8 units. For an eight-week session, the maximum is 9 units.
Enrollment
Continuous enrollment at El Camino College means enrollment in the most recent previous semester per academic year, excluding summer or winter intersessions.
You must remain enrolled in at least one course for sufficient time to receive a mark of ‘W’ or a letter grade.
You’re defined as full-time if you’re carrying 12 units or more during the regular semester, or 4 units during the summer session.
- Veteran and War Orphan benefits under the G.I. Bill are based on 12 units for full subsistence; 9 units for three-fourth subsistence; 6 units for half subsistence.
- For automobile insurance and other insurance benefits, a student must be enrolled in 12 units.
- Athletic eligibility is based on 12 units and student government eligibility is 8 units.
Enrollment in courses and programs may be limited to students meeting established prerequisites, corequisites, intercollegiate competition, and public performances.
Enrollment may also be limited due to the following:
- Number of students that may enroll in a class subject to ‘first come, first serve’ or due to health and safety considerations
- Facility limitations
- Faculty workload
- Availability of qualified instructors
- Funding limitations
- Constraint of regional planning
- Legal requirements imposed by statues, regulations, or contracts
- Course repetition (if it is the third time for an enrollment in the class you must be preapproved before you will be permitted to enroll).
