EMT studentsWelcome to the El Camino College EMT program! Emergency Medical Technicians are professional medical responders that have the opportunity to help ill and injured patients in various scenes and emergency situations. EMT principles that are covered throughout this course include, but are not limited to: leadership, followership, communication, safety, situational awareness, scene size-up, problem-solving, decision making, patient assessment and professionalism. EMT students learn about the practices and procedures through lecture, skills lab, simulations, role-playing, tactical decision games and 24 hours of field experience.  Students who successfully complete all 170 hours with an overall grade of 80% (B) or better will qualify to take the NREMT computerized adaptive test, and then once successfully passed, go on to become a licensed Emergency Medical Technician.

EMT Certification

El Camino College EMT Program provides each student that successfully completes the 170-hour course with an EMT Course Completion Certificate, EMT skills verification and authorization to test with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

It is the student's responsibility to successfully pass a computer-based adaptive EMT test through the NREMT in order to receive a National EMT Certification:

It is the student's responsibility to provide Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMSA) with all required application materials including El Camino College EMT Course Completion Certificate, NREMT certification, a LiveScan request service and associated fees:

  • EMT Course Requirements
  • All of the following shall be in hand before attending the first day of class:

    Hep B Vaccination – 3 vaccinations or positive antibody titer for Hep B or declination waiver

     MMR Vaccination - 2 vaccinations or a Positive antibody titer for all three components (Measles, Mumps & Rubella)

    Varicella Vaccination - 2 vaccinations or a Positive antibody titer for Varicella

    TB Skin test - 1 step TB Skin test or Blood Test (lab report or physician verification of results required) or if positive results or previously known positive results, provide: A clear Chest X-Ray (lab report or physician verification of results required) – results within the past 12 months

    Tdap Vaccination - Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (TDaP) vaccination, administered within the past 10 years. 

    BLS/Healthcare Provider Card - Must be American Heart Association

    Student Attire

  • Students must be in proper uniform throughout the class which includes shaving, covering all tattoos, and removing all jewelry. Students will wear navy colored pants, a white uniform shirt and black leather boots. Students may purchase their uniform at:
